Stoke Contact Martin O'Neill In Search For New Manager

Rowett added to the Daily Telegraph: "While I'm flattered by the speculation linking me with a big Premier League club like Stoke, my aim has never changed".

He enjoyed greater success during his spells in charge of Aston Villa and Leicester City. He also won two League Cup trophies during his tenure at the Foxes.

Stoke City have made contact with Martin O'Neill as they ramp up their search for a new manager.

Derby, who sit second in the Championship table, have moved quickly to tie down the 43-year-old manager to a new deal, having overseen a strong promotion push with the Rams on a seven-match unbeaten run in the league. The Potters are looking to hold talks with O'Neill about the possibility of making a return to club football, although they have other candidates in mind.

Rowett was installed as an early favourite to replace Mark Hughes as Stoke boss but Sky Sports News reported earlier on Tuesday that the former Birmingham manager was poised to sign a new contract.

He verbally agreed a two-year contract prior to the World Cup play-off, but it was not confirmed if he had signed the deal in the last few weeks.

Stoke are thought to be keen on a quick appointment, ideally before they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday evening.
