Talaq Bill: Government bid to ensure Rajya Sabha truce

The triple talaq bill gives it an opportunity to refurbish its reputation by articulating a rational position on drafting the law, aiming at protecting Muslim women from cruel and whimsical divorces and at the same time ensuring that the legislation does not lead to a police witch-hunt targeting men.

According to media reports, a woman Ayesha Khatun has approached local police station after her husband Kasif pronounced triple talaq in one go upon her and abandoned her.

"The badly drafted bill violates fundamental rights promised by the Constitution".

Under the law, instant triple talaq in any form - spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp - would be illegal and void.

Is the BJP aiming at reaping rich political dividends in Uttar Pradesh, putting the entire Opposition on the mat, by finally tabling the triple talaq Bill in Parliament?

The letter has been sent to all Rajya Sabha MPs as well as to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.

Responding to our report, Owaisi had said, "If this Bill becomes law then in future government can bring a simple amendment to set aside/make unconstitutional, Talaaq Ehsan and HASAN so whole objective is to deny Muslims to get married according to their religion". The board should have been taken into confidence by the government before rushing to Lok Sabha with the bill "AIMPLB spokesperson Maulana Khalil-ur-Rehman Sajjad Nomani said here on Friday".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the bill criminalising instant Triple Talaq has freed Muslim women after years of "suffering". Prasad had introduced the bill in Lok Sabha last Thursday and termed it "historic". Since the Supreme Court has set aside triple talaq, it no longer dissolves the marriage, and thus, causes no harm at all. Hindu Marriage Act has stronger provisions: "for 2nd marriage jail term is up to 7 years under IPC Section 494". A historical step is taken today in Parliament for empowerment of women with the passing of the Triple Talaq Bill.

The BMMA is a national coalition of Muslim women, with over one lakh members across 15 states.

Rizwana and Razia were of the view that the government should have dealt with the issue of polygamy by banning it in the same bill.
