The Crown: Helena Bonham Carter near deal to play Princess Margaret

The Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland star will take over the role from Vanessa Kirby, who played Margaret in the first two seasons.

The series, created by Peter Morgan, launched in 2016 and takes its creative cues from previous Morgan projects, including the 2006 feature film The Queen and the 2013 stage play The Audience. Netflix has yet to officially confirm the show's next season.

Carter's most notable roles include an Oscar-nominated turn in Tom Hooper's The King's Speech opposite Colin Firth and an unforgettable character in David Fincher's Fight Club opposite Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

It was previously rumored that Carter was in the running to play Queen Elizabeth. "The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds", Morgan explained. However, it has since been confirmed that, for The Crown's next two seasons, Olivia Colman (best known for her work in Broadchurch), will take over the role of Britain's longest-sitting monarch.

"You'll be like, 'Who are they?' We're the warm-up act", she said on The Tonight Show. But it would be a ideal thrill to see her on The Crown-a sumptuous, thoughtful series that has brought a dazzling new appeal to the royal family. But the excitement of it so far has been introducing new names, like Foy and Kirby.

Vanessa Kirby returned as the obstinate and passionate princess Margaret in season 2 and once again, stole every scene she was in.

The Crown season 3 will pick up sometime in the 1970s, reportedly spanning Queen Elizabeth II's reign from about 1971 to 1979. Bonham Carter would be a ideal fit for it, and based on what we know about Princess Margaret there is plenty of meaty material to come.
