Delano Regional Medical Center announced that Flores first gave birth to baby Joaquin at 11:58 p.m. on December 31.

In, Fresno, the first baby of the new year was actually born a week late.

The first twin, a boy, was born at 11:58 p.m. Sunday; he weighed 5 pounds 9 ounces, and was 18 inches, hospital officials told the station.

Her original due date was January 17, with a c-section scheduled for Jan 10.

The original due date for mom Maria Esperanza Flores Rios was January 27, so she was happy they both were born healthy after being four weeks premature, according to NBC affiliate KGET.

A doctor who helped deliver the twins says this is the first time he's experienced anything like this.

The unlikely event of a birth like this also gifted their parents the chance to take home more than $3,000 worth of baby supplies that were donated to the hospital by local community groups.

A twist of fate meant that both of them arrived in the world 20 minutes apart but in different years. "But then it turned out Maria was in labour, which was a surprise".

While such an incident is rare, a year ago, four such twin births had been reported in the United States in Georgia, Arizona, Utah, and San Diego in California.
