Vigil for WSU football player set for Friday

The police stated that 21-year-old was found dead in his apartment from an apparently inflicted gunshot wound and the suicide note found next to him.

Washington State president Kirk Schulz tweeted, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hilinski family".

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Tyler's passing", Washington State coach Mike Leach said in a statement Tuesday.

Police interviewed friends of Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski on Wednesday to try to better understand why he killed himself.

Hilinski, a redshirt sophomore, took over for Luke Falk in the Holiday Bowl after the starting senior quarterback injured his wrist.

Pullman police detectives and the Whitman County Coroner's Office are conducting a thorough investigation to confirm the suspected cause and manner of death, according to the police release. He threw for 1,176 yards seven touchdowns. "Our hearts go out to his family and friends, ' interim athletic director John Johnson said of the man known to teammates as "Clink" or 'Good Ol" Clinsky'.

Hilinski's death stunned his teammates and the community.

"The tragic news today surrounding Tyler Hilinksi is devastating to all". He had not shown up for football practice earlier in the day.

OR athletic director Rob Mullens will be the chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, starting next season. He was expected to lead Washington State onto the field next season as well. The university also is taking steps to help grieving student-athletes with psychological services and mental health counseling.

Hilinski was a star football player for Upland High in Claremont, Calif., where his family still lives.
