Wenger hints at Jonny Evans interest; admits midfielder exit possible

The former Manchester United defender is widely expected to leave West Brom before the month is out, with both Manchester City and Arsenal reported to be interested in signing him.

Other Premier League clubs are also interested in Evans but can not match the lure of European football for a player who was on the bench for Manchester United's Champions League final defeat by Barcelona in 2009. I don't know what their policy is.

"If the decision comes to finances with Man City we know we will be second best".

An interesting sub-plot centres around Alexis Sanchez since City are likely to bring forward plans to sign the Chile striker this month following a knee injury to Gabriel Jesus that could keep the Brazil forward out for two months.

"When solicitations happen you respond, at the moment it's very quiet".

The north Londoners have conceded 28 goals in 22 Premier League games this season.

"I think Arsenal have said that if the right player comes along they will be looking into it", Phelan told Sky Sports News on Monday.

Wenger acknowledged that his defence has struggled this season, with the Gunners sitting in sixth place in the Premier League and having suffered a third-round FA Cup exit against Nottingham Forest.

However, speaking in his press conference ahead of Arsenal's Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea, Wenger denied any agreement between the Baggies and Arsenal.

Wenger is believed to have called the player personally in an effort to seal the deal and give assurances about his role in the squad but Evans will need more.
