2 dead, 70 injured after train derailment in South Carolina

An Amtrak train traveling from NY to Miami crashed into a freight train early Sunday, killing at least two people, injuring at least 116 others. Officials had initially said 70 people with injuries were transported to hospitals for treatment, but later adjusted the figure.

Amtrak says the train, Amtrak #91, had 139 passengers and 8 crew members on board. It did not address the cause of the crash but said CSX maintains all of the tracks and signal systems where the accident happened and controls access to the sidings and yards.

About 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaked at the scene.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster confirmed both people killed in the crash were Amtrak staff. The US Federal Railroad Administration estimates Amtrak has about two derailments per month, but passenger fatalities are far less common than fatalities among those hit by a train.

"We should have had a lot more casualties, but we didn't", said Lexington County coroner Margaret Fisher, who identified the dead at an afternoon news conference.

The accident happened when the passenger train carrying 147 people en route from NY to Miami, was diverted from the main line. "Thank you to our incredible First Responders for the work they've done".

"Weather conditions at nearby Columbia metro airport showed that it was dry with a visibility of about 10 miles around the time of the incident", said meteorologist Chris Dolce.

A spokesman for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said that injuries ranged from minor cuts to broken bones, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sunday's was just the latest fatal incident involving an Amtrak train in the past few weeks. Last week, an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to a retreat in West Virginia collided with a garbage truck. The tool monitors a train's movement and can slow its speed or bring the train to a complete stop to avoid accidents, including collisions with other trains.

"My prayers are with the families of those killed in the train crash in Lexington County this morning, and hoping for the best for all those injured".
