Brexit Transition Period 'Not A Given', Michel Barnier Warns UK

Brexit Transition Period 'Not A Given', Michel Barnier Warns UK

The two sides agreed a fudge in December that promised to keep regulations the same in Northern Ireland as in EU-member Ireland, as well as between Northern Ireland and the British mainland while giving Britain a right to diverge from the EU. "We need courageous judges who are confident to refer questions like this to the ECJ".

He confirmed the Guardian's report that, under the draft withdrawal agreement, Northern Ireland would in effect stay in the single market and customs union where relevant to the north-south economy and Good Friday agreement.

"There was also agreement on the importance of moving quickly in the negotiations to secure a trading relationship with the European Union that is as tariff-free and frictionless as possible following the implementation period".

According to the experts, no one believes in a transition by the end of 2020.

"We think the British people deserve a final say on the Brexit deal and believe the country has been led down a unsafe false turn", Malloch-Brown said.

Relations between Britain and the European Commission sank to a new low on Friday after Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, casually claimed at a press conference the United Kingdom had cancelled an important meeting due to a "diary clash".

In the last decade, we have seen the ever-expanding and stifling bureaucracy of the unelected liberal-dominated central committee in Brussels, commonly known as the EU Commission.

Mr Barnier also tried to defuse a row with David Davis, after the Brexit Secretary fumed that Brussels was "unwise" to devise a plan to sanction Britain during the transition.

The transition period, which the Prime Minister requested in her Florence speech, was previously considered to be the most straightforward part of the Brexit process due to its simple nature.

After all, the UK Government's own Brexit analysis confirms that remaining in the single market would be by far the least economically damaging of the Brexit options.

If arguments persist, the transition period that businesses urgently want can not be taken for granted, he told reporters in Brussels.

The EU has released a position paper showing it wants to put in place a method to rapidly curtail the UK's single market benefits if it breaches the terms of a transition deal.

European officials have made clear that Britain's plan to leave the EU internal market and customs union will inevitably mean new barriers in some of those areas.

"This is a democratic and patriotic effort to recover our future and we welcome support for our efforts from many quarters", he said.

The EU was expecting a briefing by the British side on how it envisages the future relationship as May is stuck between hard line Brexiteers and those who advocate for maintaining closer ties with the EU.

"The time has come to make choices", Barnier repeated his message from Monday when he met with May in London.

Barnier also noted, with some dismay, the U.K.'s demand to be able to object to new European Union rules or laws adopted during the transition period, and its request for an "opt-in" on justice and home affairs issues.
