Fed Cup: Serena Williams loses on return to competition

"Serena's gonna be joining her sister Venus!" she announced, to roars of approval before Williams appeared dressed in a white top, dark blue shorts topped off with a red headband.

Every mom who's ever tried to ease back into exercise a few months after giving birth-especially after a hard C-section-knows how much of a challenge it can be to just pull on a pair of shorts, throw your hair in a messy bun, and take those first few tentative steps.

But, as reported by the Mirror, she was more concerned with her little girl being present at the match.

Despite the loss, it was a positive step for Serena, who was bedridden for six weeks from a series of complications, including a pulmonary embolism that led to multiple surgeries, after her daughter was delivered by emergency caesarean section. After more than a year away from competition, she has no official ranking but can gain entry into tournaments with her protected No. 1 ranking. "I've been training and it was just exciting to be out there", she said.

"I feel like I didn't expect to play, you know, like that for me".

"It's great. It's her first match so I'm glad she got to see it", Serena said in an on-court interview.

But team captain Kathy Rinaldi confirmed her participation after sister Venus won her singles match against Richel Hogenkamp earlier to seal victory for the United States, 3-0. "So I feel like that I'm on the right track".

There is precedent for mothers on the pro tour finding success, but only one player since 1980 has won a Grand Slam title after giving birth: The Belgian Kim Clijsters captured the 2009 U.S. Open title with her 18-month-old daughter Jada in tow.

The dead-rubber was supposed to be the feel-good, icing on the cake, but the Dutch players had other ideas.

Ahead of the tie, Serena had refused to be drawn on her Grand Slam hopes for the year.

Still, Williams' attempted comeback will be a major story line in the sport this year, and fans will be watching closely. "Three more than her mum Serena".

After that, Williams walked off the court with her sister by her side and the pair shared a smile, despite the loss.
