Frank Reich Emerges as Favorite for Colts' Head Coaching Job

The Colts thought they were locked into getting Josh McDaniels as their next head coach.

Reich returns to the franchise where he started his coaching career in 2008.

Multiple reports from National Football League sources say the Colts and Eagles Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich have agreed for Reich to become the Colts next head coach.

Reich, then, has familiarity with the Colts organization, which perhaps was considered a positive since McDaniels ultimately never became comfortable enough to make the move.

This comes after Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the Colts brought Reich in for an interview after McDaniels elected to stay with the Patriots instead of taking the Indianapolis position. Expect big things from the offense next season. Despite losing starting quarterback Carson Wentz to a torn ACL in Week 14, Philadelphia managed to win five of its final six games with the last being the 41-33 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

The Colts may wind up with an offensive coordinator from the Super Bowl as their next head coach, but it's not the one they expected to be hiring.

The loss of Reich and DeFilippo would leave the Eagles in need of both an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. Reich was Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach in 2009 and '10 before coaching Reggie Wayne and the rest of the receivers in 2011. They've reportedly landed on another Super Bowl OC.

After McDaniels' reversal, general manager Chris Ballard launched a second search that included interviews with New Orleans' assistant Dan Campbell, Reich and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. The two would meet for more than an hour on the night before games and go over the play sheet.

Ballard, in light of McDaniels' reversal, said "just because you're the first choice doesn't make you the right choice".
