Mahoney's longtime manager, Paul Martino, said Mahoney died on Sunday in Chicago after a brief hospitalisation.

In addition to his 11-season run on "Frasier", Mahoney had numerous film credits and theatrical roles with the Steppenwolf Theater Company.

His first major big screen role was in 1987's Tin Men, directed by Barry Levinson; he was also in Moonstruck that year, and both Frantic and Eight Men Out in 1988.
