According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest iteration of the story was penned by Simon Rich, whose credits include work on The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live and Pixar's Inside Out. David Heyman stated in the November 2016 interview that they weren't planning on using the books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator for this new story. Tim Burton then set about adapting the same material with 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp as an extremely unusual Wonka.

Entertainment Weekly reports King is in final talks with the studio to take on the project, which will be a reimagining of Roald Dahl's classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. On another hand, Paul King's Paddington films are pure joy, so if someone has to helm this reboot, I'm glad it's him. And there's some serious talent behind it. Another Dahl adaptation, The Witches, has a script written by Guillermo del Toro and is attracting directors, with Robert Zemeckis said to have met for the project.
