Sen. Chris Murphy: Trump Decision on Russia Sanctions Means No Deterrents

"Russia hacked our elections", Schumer said.

Also in Washington was the head of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence, according to the Washington Post.

Pompeo's defense came in the form of a letter to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who on Tuesday questioned why us officials met with their Russian counterparts in the U.S.

A Central Intelligence Agency spokesperson declined to give details of Pompeo's meetings.

The Trump administration let a top Russian spy official visit the USA last week for meetings with the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) even though there are sanctions against the Russian that prohibit such visits.

In his letter defending the meeting, Pompeo did not specifically confirm that he met with Naryshkin.

USA intelligence agencies have accused the FSB - considered Russia's main domestic intelligence agency - and the GRU - the Russian military's intelligence arm - of being behind the hacking of US political parties and activists.

Naryshkin was accompanied at the meeting in Washington by Alexander Bortnikov, who directs the top KGB successor agency known as the Federal Security Service, according to two US officials, who were not authorized to disclose the information and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In the interview, Pompeo also repeated his message that North Korea was close to developing missiles which could be used in a nuclear attack on the United States. The CIA followed a multi-agency legal process to give access to Russian officials under sanctions, the official said. "Director Pompeo's refusal to answer that question is deeply troubling".

Among other questions, Schumer asked how Naryshkin was able to enter the United States because he is under US sanctions barring him from the country. Did any White House or National Security Council official meet with Naryshkin?

CAATSA - or the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act - is a law signed by Trump in August that imposed sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea. "Which U.S. officials did he meet with?"

The CIA released a statement saying that while it does not discuss the schedules of US intelligence leaders, "rest assured that any interaction with foreign intelligence agencies would have been conducted in accordance with USA law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies".

"We can watch very focused efforts to steal American information, to infiltrate the United States with spies, with people who are going to work on behalf of the Chinese government against America", he said. The publication could not establish whether Korobov took part in the meeting. Other U.S. agencies might need to speak with officials from an enemy nation.

Some intelligence officers have said they see a disconnect between the administration's desire for rapprochement and public statements from intelligence leaders that Russian Federation will continue to try to disrupt the USA democratic process.

"Nobody in either party trusts this president to represent American national interests when it comes to Russia", Brown said.

"I haven't seen a significant decrease in their activity", Pompeo told the BBC.
