UFC 221 Results: Yoel Romero Sleeps Luke Rockhold In Third Round

Yoel Romero failed to make weight badly on Friday and so he was not eligible to win the interim middleweight championship in his fight with Luke Rockhold on Saturday in the main event of UFC 221 in Perth, Australia. Part of the blame lies on Whittaker pulling out of the Rockhold fight at UFC 221, because if he was healthy Romero wouldn't have even been part of this discussion, as Romero was supposed to fight David Branch at UFC Orlando.

Following tonight's fight, UFC President Dana White went on to confirm that Romero would get his chance in the Octagon against Whittaker again in a rematch of the two men's fight of last July in which Romero suffered a loss by unanimous decision.

He hasn't fought since winning the belt.

Romero turns 41 in April but shows no signs of slowing down and still has the ability to end any fight in a heartbeat with his brutal, fight-ending power.

Romero, meanwhile, will likely take on the reigning champ, Robert Whittaker, later this year. Remaining on the outside, Romero slapped in a right jab.

"Rockhold is a very good athlete and an fantastic fighter", Romero said after the fight.

Obviously, this isn't a good look and it's even worse when there are questionable scorecards and especially awful when those scorecards land in favor of an Australian or New Zealand-based fighter, as they did in the opening bout of the evening.

"Typical. Par for the course with Yoel Romero", Rockhold responded, later posting on Twitter: "Should have be doing the salsa in the sauna". But there were too many punches from Romero to defend. "The Reaper" was elevated to undisputed champion when Georges St. Pierre recently vacated the title after defeating Michael Bisping at UFC 217. He sent Rockhold falling to his backside courtesy of an overhand left, then finished him off with a left uppercut that put Rockhold out cold. Adesanya overcome a tough first round to pick apart Rob Wilkinson, and score a second round TKO victory.

Hunt landed a huge shot to drop Blaydes early in the fight, prompting Blaydes to turn to his wrestling.

After Rockhold had gathered some of his scattered bearings, Romero tried to console him, something that made for a hard watch.

As good as Romero is, it's not fair to reward him with a title shot.
