White House controversy overshadows Trump's budget rollout

White House controversy overshadows Trump's budget rollout

Willoughby and Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, publicly accused Porter of abusing them emotionally, verbally and physically during their marriages.

They just couldn't resist. "There is no place for domestic violence in our society".

The president's praise for Porter's job performance drew a rebuke from former Vice President Joe Biden. His second wife had filed a police report against Porter after he punched a glass door.

Porter resigned abruptly this week when the allegations of spousal abuse were made public, initially by the Daily Mail.

But his suggestion that he would be willing to step down if the president wanted him to reflected the degree to which the scandal surrounding Porter has engulfed the White House. In the conversation, Porter denied the accusations.

And many, including the president himself, have turned their ire on Kelly for vouching for Porter's character and falsely asserting that he had moved aggressively to oust him once his misdeeds were discovered.

Willoughby also says she disclosed the abuse to the Federal Bureau of Investigation as they reviewed Porter for a potential security clearance - a clearance that the New York Times says was reportedly delayed due to claims from both women - and there have been conflicting reports as to who in the administration knew about Porter's past and when.

Then, the photo surfaced.

"I think the President of the United States hopes that all Americans can be successful in whatever they do, and if they've had any issues in the past - I'm not confirming or denying one way or the other - but if they do, the president wants success for all Americans", Sanders said.

The senators also question whether Porter, who served as Trump's staff secretary, disclosed the allegations on his applications for a security clearance or White House employment. "But as soon as it became apparent us that the allegations were true, Rob Porter had to go".

For Jennifer Willoughby, one of Porter's former wives, the president's response was expected because he doesn't exactly represent "a model of kindness and forgiveness", she wrote in an op-ed for Time magazine on Sunday. For her part, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she worked directly with Porter every day for a year and called him "a person with the highest integrity and exemplary character".

"We've addressed this situation extensively and we have nothing more to add at this time on the topic", Sanders said. "I spoke to him and he relayed that message directly to me and I'm relaying it directly to you". Trump reminded the gathered press that Porter maintains his innocence and is "very sad now", and shared his prediction that Porter has a "great career ahead of him".

As for President Trump's tweet over the weekend about how "live are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation", Mulvaney said it wasn't actually a reference to Porter but former Republican National Committee finance chairman and businessman Steve Wynn, who resigned following harassment allegations.
