Yoel Romero fails to make weight in UFC Perth farce

Rockhold faces Yoel Romero for the interim UFC middleweight title Saturday night live from the Perth Arena in Perth, Western Australia. Romero will not be eligible to win the interim strap because he missed weight.

The 40-year-old vowed to hit the sauna in a bid to lose the excess weight but when he returned, weighed in at 187.7.

Rockhold was clearly upset with his opponent following the first weigh in.

Romero lost the right to compete for the title just a few hours ago after he failed to make the middleweight championship limit of 185lbs at weigh-ins.

But when Whittaker was ruled out through illness on January 13, Romero was named his replacement with the fight downgraded to interim belt status. Rockhold would need to agree to fight an overweight Romero, an agreement that would net the former middleweight champion a portion of Romero's fight purse.

Though Romero was previously scheduled to face David Branch on February 24, he is technically taking the fight on short notice, agreeing to take the fight against Rockhold last month.

"Romero took this fight on short notice when (Robert) Whittaker fell out and he didn't get a full camp", White said.

The antibiotics left him bedridden for several weeks and his health deteriorated further after contracting chickenpox.
