Her ex-boyfriend, Orlando Tercero, also 22, was taken into custody in Nicaragua four days later, officials said.

Authorities say Tercero, a USA citizen born in Miami, flew to Nicaragua before her body was discovered. "The investigation determined that the person of interest has left the United States by global air travel flight, prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", police said this weekend in a statement obtained by ABC News.

How and where Tercero was arrested is not immediately clear, but he will be held in a prison in El Chipote, about 40 miles away from Managua, the country's capital, local news stations reported. In 2013, Nicaraguan police arrested Eric Justin Toth, a fugitive on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted suspected of child pornography offences, and handed him over to us authorities. It is unclear whether Tercero has retained an attorney.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell is now preparing the case for a grand jury. The Nicaragua National Police did not disclose further details about the arrest.

"Though we can not bring Haley Anderson back, we will fight for justice", District Attorney Steve Cornwell wrote on his official Facebook page.

"Now Nicaragua does have the discretion as to whether or not they want to honor the extradition request", said attorney Peter Charnetsky.

In 2013, Nicaragua extradited Eric Toth, who had been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List for producing child pornography.

Upstate prosecutors say they are working "diligently" in seeking a grand jury indictment against a man who left the country after a fellow Binghamton University nursing student was slain.

Others also commented on Anderson's generosity. "Without her even knowing it".
