At Least 2 Dead In New York City Helicopter Crash

A tourist helicopter plunged into the East River Sunday night, leaving at least five people trapped inside the sinking vessel, police sources said.

"A helicopter earlier this evening descended into the East River near East 90 St.", said the New York Police Department (NYPD) on Twitter.

A spokesman for the mayor's office, Eric Phillips, confirmed the fatalities on Twitter on Monday.

Divers rushed to the scene and freed the passengers, two of whom were pronounced dead, amid strong currents and frigid temperatures, Nigro added.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched three boats to aid in the response, joining New York City emergency responders.

"Five people have been recovered by New York City Police Department and the New York City Fire Department divers and their conditions are now unknown", the statement said. The New York Post described the chopper as a "tour helicopter".

The Eurocopter AS350 went down just after 7pm on Sunday in the waterway just north of Roosevelt Island and is "reportedly inverted in the water", a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says. Crashes are not uncommon. In June 2005, two helicopters crashed into the East River in the same week.
