Bihar bypoll results: RJD wins Jehanabad, BJP retains Bhabua

The Araria Lok Sabha seat became vacant after the death previous year of Mohammad Taslimuddin, the sitting RJD MP.

The balloting in Jehanabad and Bhabua followed the death of RJD and BJP legislators respectively.

Reacting to the poll outcome, Tejashwi Yadav, the son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, said, "This is a victory of my father's ideology".

In Bihar, the ruling JD (U)-BJP combine and the opposition RJD-Congress alliance were locked in a battle in Araria Lok seat and the two Assembly constituencies.

In a matter of hours, Tejashwi became the leader of the opposition from the deputy chief minister.

The constituency has 35 per cent Muslim.

Workers of SP and RJD celebrated across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by distributing candies and bursting firecrackers.

In the Jehanabad assembly seat, RJD's Uday Yadav defeated his Janata Dal (United) rival Abhiram Sharma by more than 30,000 votes.

After sweeping the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and the assembly elections previous year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced formidable rivals in the form of Samajwadi Party (SP) and BSP who stitched a last minute alliance in the by-polls.

Prasad also thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, who congratulated him on the "great victory", saying "Thank you, didi".

The JD (U) had also put up its candidate in 2014 elections who finished third behind the BJP. Both are considered traditional RJD supporters.

In Phulpur, SP's Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 29,474 with 218,963 votes, while BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is second with 189,489 votes after 20 rounds of counting. The saffron party fielded Pandey's wife Rinky Rani.

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rinki Pandey defeated Sambhu Patel of the Congress, a RJD ally, by 15,000 votes in Bhabua.

Araria Agriculture Production Market Committee has been made the polling station for Araria Lok Sabha seat.

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi said: "No political conclusions should be drawn from these bypolls as voters expressed a natural sympathy for the kin of the deceased leaders who were elected earlier". Sukhdeo Paswan won on BJP ticket in 2004.
