Black Panther,' 4 weeks in, tops 'A Wrinkle in Time'

However, given the success of Black Panther and numerous studio's other movies over the previous year, even if A Wrinkle in Time doesn't meet financial expectations, it won't be a major loss for the studio.

Dave Hollis, president of worldwide distribution for Disney, told Variety that "Black Panther" and "A Wrinkle in Time" accounted for inclusion through their portrayals of strong female and minority characters. She's quickly become someone to watch in Hollywood, and she's just released her newest film, A Wrinkle in Time, a major Disney property that is essentially about a "little black girl with glasses". Throughout the weekend, the film gained $41.1 million.

According to CNN, this is the first time that that two films driven by black directors with budgets exceeding $100 million have managed to clinch the top two box office spots.

Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon play the three supernatural beings who help guide Meg Murry (Storm Reid), a 13-year-old who loves physics, in a search for her missing father that involves saving the universe from impending evil.

Next weekend sees the release of Tomb Raider, which will certainly shake up the box office once again. Directed by Johannes Roberts, the horror sequel to 2008's "The Strangers" stars Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison and Lewis Pullman.

Debuting in second place, Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" came in soft with $33.3 million, slightly lower than the $35 million some analysts had expected heading into the weekend.

Jennifer Lawrence's smutty spy thriller 'Red Sparrow' took a beating at the box office over its second week. MGM's second weekend of "Death Wish" followed in seventh with $6.6 million at 2,882 sites to give the Bruce Willis reboot almost $24 million in 10 days. It has now gained a domestic total of $562 million, with more than a billion dollars globally. The actor died at age 26 in a freak accident in 2016. Warner also launching action-adventure "Tomb Raider", starring Alicia Vikander, in around 3,600 locations.
