Driver was killed when bus crashed into ravine

A bus carrying a Texas high school band home from Disney World tumbled off a dark highway and down a ravine early Tuesday morning - killing the driver and injuring dozens of students and chaperones, officials said.

Another bus carrying students was ahead of the bus that crashed at the time.

That second bus continued home and arrived safely at the high school around 1:30 p.m.

The driver of the bus, Harry Caligone, died at the scene and the injured were taken to ten different hospitals in the region.

News 5 has confirmed that the passengers aboard the charter bus are band members from Channelview High School (Texas).

"This bus was following and they sent some parents that were on that bus to help out as well as staff members", said Ollis.

No one was injured or killed in the other three crashes.

He said he looked down to see the bus lying on its side near the base of a concrete embankment, its front end crumpled.

Josh Torres said his 17-year-old sister, Bianca Torres, was sitting at the rear of the bus when the impact of the wreck tossed her forward several rows. It's not immediately clear what caused the crash.

The bus pulled into Channelview High School east of Houston under police escort Tuesday afternoon.

More than 40 passengers on the bus were taken to 10 hospitals across southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle to be evaluated, but the total number of injuries wasn't yet known.

No other vehicles appeared to have been involved, he added. Our prayers are with the injured and their families at this time.

Traffic is being diverted at the 5mm (Hwy 90 exit) on I-10 WB on the Florida side.

Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack confirmed the death Tuesday morning while talking to new reporters.

First responders had to rappel down a 50-foot ravine in the middle of Interstate 10 to reach them, and helicopters brought survivors to hospitals, a sheriff said.

Authorities in Alabama say a charter tour bus carrying students on a school trip from Houston, Texas, has plunged into a ravine, with multiple injuries reported. Interstate 10 was blocked for hours where the accident occurred between Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida.
