Earlier, Australia were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by overall tournament leaders South Africa, losing 29-17.

"I can't even tell you how it feels - it's just unbelievable", Barrett said amid ecstatic celebrations at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"We came into this tournament knowing we've made the semifinal three years in a row, and it was all about taking that next step", USA captain Ben Pinkelman said.

But it was unable to stop the irresistible momentum of the US team which was unbeaten in the tournament and which beat England 17-12 in the quarterfinals and Olympic champion Fiji 19-7 in the semis.

The United States Eagles speedster ran the length of the field to score a stunning individual try against Fiji in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Sevens on Monday morning (NZT).

He said playing in Las Vegas was one of the tournaments they looked forward especially for the many fans.

Baker has 24 tries in five tournaments this season, to sit third in the standings.

New Zealand are now second on the World Sevens Series leaderboard behind South Africa. The Americans are in seventh place with 36 points.
