Erdogan: Afrin town should be in our hands by this evening

"We have got a little bit closer to Afrin". In September 2017, Russian Federation confirmed that the contract had been signed, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that an advance payment had been made.

The YPG, the main target of the Turkish operation, are the attack force of the Syrian Democratic Forces supported by the United States. "Look, right now, first civilians are being taken out of Afrin in vehicles through a special corridor", Erdogan said. "I hope that Afrin will, God willing, have completely fallen by the evening", Erdogan said in the speech.

"Operation Olive Branch in Afrin is aimed at eliminating terrorists in the region", he said. Ankara considers the YPG and PYD to be terrorist organizations.

"Even if Turkey's concerns over the border are legitimate. this absolutely does not justify the action by Turkish troops deep inside the Afrin area", Le Drian told parliament.

The military statement made no mention of civilian casualties, and said only "terrorists and shelters, gun emplacements, weapons, tools and equipment belonging to them have been targeted during the operation".

Around 350,000 people live in the city, including families displaced from other parts of the enclave.

Erdogan also said that the terrorists lack the ability to construct the tunnels in the mountains that they use.

"We are surveying the terror nests in northern Iraq at every opportunity", said Mr Erdogan.

Cavusoglu showed his approval, saying, "The sooner we receive the S-400s, the better".

Over the course of Turkey's military operation in Syria - officially called operation Olive Branch - reports have emerged of confrontation between Turkish forces and local combatants allied to the Syrian government.
