Hearthstone Gets Spooky with The Witchwood, Its First Expansion of 2018

The expansion will also add a new Monster Hunt mode to the action, similar to Kobolds & Catacombs' Dungeon Run, that challenges players with a series of eight increasingly hard encounters leading into a big boss fight. "Play Mode" features traditional head-to-head battles, with players facing off for a chance to increase their medal ranking and earn card packs along the way.

Blizzard announced newest Hearthstone expansion 'The Witchwood, ' only moments ago. And for a different type of challenge, players can enter "The Forge", where they start each match by building a deck from a new set of cards, and then use that deck to duel other Forge participants.

A total of 135 new cards are being added in the upcoming expansion, and some will carry the new Echo keyword. More Witchwood card reveals will start on March 26, and the expansion will go live in mid-April. Apparently a minion with "Echo" can be played multiple times in the same turn. The first, Echo, allows you to play as many copies of a card as you have the mana for.

For those that have been waiting for a new mode, you'll be getting it with Witchwood as well. It will launch two weeks after The Witchwood expansion. Baku the Mooneater-Legendary minion, 7/8, 9-mana cost- rewards odd-cost decks with an upgraded Hero Power (Blizzard did not offer specifics on upgraded Hero Powers, though this may function like a previous Legendary, Justicar Trueheart). Similarly, Genn Greymane is a 6 mana, 6/5 minion that reduces your hero power's cost to one crystal if your deck has nothing but cards with an even mana cost. As for Rush, it works similar to Charge but you can't attack the enemy player directly to his life points on the first turn the card it's played.

It sounds like Witchwood could be the most intriguing addition to the Hearthstone world to date, especially with the new mode and the stack of new cards coming our way.

Starting today and up until the expansion is released, allies of Gilneas can pre-purchase The Witchwood card packs in a special 50-pack bundle that also includes 20 bonus packs, as well as the "In a Dark Wood" card back for free.

Hearthstone is now available on PC, Mac, and mobile platforms.
