Sherman, 49ers to meet Saturday

According to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, the future Hall of Fame quarterback dined with San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday night, discussing the prospects of making the Bay Area his next football home.

The Seahawks also released cornerback Jeremy Lane, another move that had been long rumored.

If not for one of the more boneheaded calls in National Football League history, Sherman would be leaving the Great Northwest as a two-time Vince Lombardi Trophy victor.

Sherman, 29, is coming off a 2017 campaign that saw him miss seven games with an Achilles injury.

Sherman ended last season on injured reserve because of a ruptured right Achilles.

The talented, brash defender has been one of the faces of a team that appeared in two Super Bowls and won one, success built on a hard-hitting defensive identity and the vaunted "Legion of Boom" secondary.

"I plan on playing five or six more years whether it's here or elsewhere", Sherman said.

But Sherman said at the Sports Star awards he thought he would be ready for the beginning of mini-camp.

Sherman has been a free agent for less than 24 hours. While it sounds good on paper, bringing Sherman into an already crowded cornerback group wouldn't be the most ideal situation unless he chose to take quite a hefty pay cut from the terms that he has grown accustomed to in recent years.

New England enters the weekend with approximately $23 million in cap space, which should enable the team to re-sign Nate Solder and make a run at another prominent player. Saleh has implemented a defensive system that is similar to the Seahawks.

This doesn't mean the Pats won't get involved in the Sherman Sweepstakes.
