Trump voices confidence North Korea won't conduct missile test amid talks

The remarks come as Trump accepted a surprise invitation to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Trump was quick to say "Yes" on his Twitter account, but on what terms?

"This is the year that Canada is chairing the G7 and I think that gives us an opportunity and responsibility to play a role here". China continues to be helpful!

Trump tweeted Saturday that Abe "is very enthusiastic about talks with North Korea".

No US President, while in office, has conversed even telephonically with any leader of the isolated Communist regime that poses a nuclear threat to mainland America.

"Chinese President XI XINPING and I spoke at length about the meeting with KIM JONG UN of North Korea", Trump posted at 10:22 am, misspelling his counterpart's name.

The North wants a peace treaty to end the technically still-active Korean War and drive all USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, removing what it says is a hostile encirclement of its territory by Washington and Seoul.

Trump's apparently impromptu decision to begin setting up talks contrasts with Kim's situation - North Korea has prepared deliberately for decades for a meeting with the sitting US president as a major step toward gaining global legitimacy.

While Trump did not expand on what the "ominous alternative" could be, in the past he has threatened Kim with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

It was not immediately clear which meetings Trump was referring to or their timing.

Mr Kim's meeting with South Korean officials made it onto the front page of the Rodong Sinmun, a leading state-run newspaper, but neither his policy concessions, as described by the South Korean government, nor his planned summit with Moon in April appeared to have been reported publicly in the secretive North. Numerous media outlets ran reports claiming the president was elevating Kim's status on the world stage.

There has been limited reaction from Kim´s regime, but South Korean President Moon Jae-in said news of the summit - announced by his national security advisor on a visit to Washington - was "like a miracle."For his part, Xi urged the two leaders to begin talks as "soon as possible" and praised Trump´s "positive aspiration."China has always been North Korea´s most important ally but has been on board with the sanctions agreed at the United Nations". "I'm sure [the prospect of a summit] comes as a relief to a certain degree".

While Trump has maintained the meeting will happen, the White House sought to cast the encounter as tentative on Friday and dependent on whether the North takes "concrete actions" to signal its level of seriousness about the talks. -Japanese trade relations are. Not fair or sustainable. The move abruptly reversed decades of US policy aimed at preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
