Preliminary hearing set for Oct. 16

Mathew C. Clark, the suspect in the Newcomb Hotel Fire, has been found mentally fit to stand trial.

At a Wednesday afternoon court appearance, Judge Scott Walden scheduled a preliminary hearing for Clark on Oct. 16 at 1:45 p.m.

Clark, 24, is accused of setting the September 6 fire that destroyed the Newcomb Hotel in Downtown Quincy.

Clark is charged with one count of Burglary and one count of Criminal Damage to Property and faces up to 14 years in prison on each charge if convicted.

Clark is claiming the fire was accidental.

Clark told police that he went into the building to look for scrap metal. He said his flashlight stopped working so put some paper in a metal can and lit it on fire. The can then fell on a blanket and caught fire.
