Announces plans for 2nd Street upgrade, job creation

Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore announced a significant partnership during Friday’s State of the City address.

Kohl Wholesale, the City of Quincy and the Illinois Department of Transportation Economic Development Program applied for a grant to reconstruct Second Street between Maine and Hampshire.

“If awarded the $430,000 grant, Kohl Wholesale has agreed to not only invest their own money in the project but will hire 22 full time positions that will generate $700,000 of salaries annually to Quincy,” said Moore.

Moore also highlighted the City’s year in review.

“We were greeted with troubles with our airport, a budget deficit and economic development situations that need to be addressed. We spent $1.2 million less than the proposed budget, which is almost a 4% reduction,” said Moore. “I think we’ve really accomplished a lot in a year, but we have a lot of priorities to work on. Priorities like solving our pension crisis here in the City of Quincy, working towards a budget that will spend only what it takes in and having a long term infrastructure plan.”

While applauding local education leaders for their dedication to the future of youth in the Quincy area, Moore also issued a challenge to younger generations.

“I challenge the next generation to have a common vision for Quincy. We’ve been very blessed in Quincy that in the 1990s, a vision was adopted for our Central Business District and our Broadway corridor, but now we have two generations that weren’t even 18 at that time,” said Moore. “They really have an opportunity to unite the City around a common vision.”

Other topics discussed during Moore’s address included renewal of the City’s enterprise zone, updating the long-term vision for Quincy and a five year comprehensive plan.
