Health insurance expenses for City Council members tops $100,000; Cell phone bills also running in the red
With about six weeks remaining in the current fiscal year, the 14 people who vote on the City's budget are seeing their own budgets run in the red.
At tonight's Quincy City Council meeting, aldermen will hear a third reading and presumably vote on moving $4,000 from the City's General Fund into their own budget to cover increases in health insurance.
The budget for health insurance for those aldermen who use it is $97,585, so tonight's action will push the expense over the $100,000 mark and next year's insurance line item will be more than $100,000.
Aldermen are also running over budget on their cell phone budgets. The administration has had to add nearly $3,000 to the budget to cover their cell phone bills. The communications budget for the current fiscal year is $7,000 and that expense is now at about $9,900.
Aldermen are paid $100 per meeting and meet 53 times a year. The budget for aldermanic salaries is $75,500.
The overall City Council budget is $236,688, which includes $25,200 in a generic "miscellaneous" line item.
