Rockford Leads in DUI Arrests for 7th Straight Year

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) has released the results of its' 24th annual survey of Illinois police departments, and for the 7th straight year, the Rockford Police Department leads the state in DUI arrests with 556 in 2013.

Naperville was a close second with 553, followed by Decatur (485), Springfield (410), Carol Stream (392), Elmhurst (300), Normal (279), Rock Island (274), Oak Lawn (262) and Aurora (256).

The Quincy Police Department had 125 DUI arrests in 2013, while the Adams County Sheriff's Department had 44 arrests.

The biggest increase in arrests among departments was in the city of Champaign where DUI arrests jumped by 141% in 2013 compared to 2012.  Other municipalities with large increases from 2012 to 2013 are Chicago Heights (63.6%), Bloomington (55.7%), Loves Park (48.6%), Lombard (41.4%) and Gurnee (40.6%).

“Of all the people who died in Illinois motor vehicle crashes, thirty-five percent lost their lives in crashes involving a drunk driver, that is more than 350 deaths each year,” said Rita Kreslin, Executive Director of AAIM. “Departments that make more DUI arrests and who have effective DUI enforcement in their communities are saving lives by preventing impaired driving crashes and crash fatalities.”

The survey, conducted by AAIM and funded through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, covered nearly 700 departments across the state, with 84% of the departments responding.
