Ameren customers who didn't opt out are being transferred over to First Energy Solutions this month
Electricity customers in four Adams County communities who voted opted to receive electricity from an alternate power company have begun to see that happen.
That’s according to officials with SIMEC, a company that brokers electricity rates for deregulated energy customers.
Voters in Quincy, Coatsburg, Columbus, and Mendon affirmed aggregation when it was recently put to a vote.
Ameren Illinois customers in those communities are being transferred to First Energy as their meters are read over the month. First Energy Solutions, the energy marketing division of First Energy of Ohio, began providing electric service to the local communities in February.
Those customers are paying a flat rate of 4.194 cents per kilowatt hour for three years. That compares to 5.484 cents for Ameren’s eight-month billing period between September and May and last year’s four-month summer period rate of 6.13 cents per kilowatthour.
The new flat rate also includes ancillary costs like fuel adjustment charges that customarily are shown as additional charges on Ameren bills. The three-year flat rate includes those charges.
Officials reported that nearly 95 percent of the eligible customers in the participating communities had chosen to receive their electric supply from First Energy. The number of eligible customers who chose to opt out of the program was 5.7 percent. Anyone within the communities being served under the new program may opt out without penalty or fee.
Voters in Camp Point, Golden, Liberty, Loraine, Payson and Riverside Township will decide in the April 9 election whether to form a similar buyers group for their communities.
Ameren Illinois continues to deliver electricity to customers in communities participating in the electric aggregation program. AmerenIllinois, for example, will deliver electricity it receives from First Energy. That means that customers who need to report an electric service problem our outage still will call AmerenIllinois.
The local utility also will continue to issue electric bills, and participants in the electricity aggregation initiative will receive only one bill—and make a single payment for electricity. First Energy’s supply charge will appear in the supply portion of the bill. Electricity users will call AmerenIllinois’ toll-free number with any billing questions.
