Titus's exhibits show a variety of textiles

An exhibit by Ann Miller Titus is on display through February 16 in the John Wood Community College Heath Center Art Gallery.  Miller will host a reception on Thursday, February 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery located in the lower level of the Paul Heath Community Education and Fine Arts Center on the JWCC campus in Quincy at 48th and Harrison.  The display is open to the public during the College’s regular operating hours.

Miller has been stitching since she was a young girl, when her grandmother gave her a cross stitch sampler.  By the mid 1980’s, her love for stitching grew and she transformed traditional wall quilts into unique and beautiful pieces of art.  Now 20 years later, her experiments with a variety of textiles are displayed regularly in regional galleries.

Titus continues to honor her quilting roots by experimenting with a wide variety of surface design techniques to alter textiles while stitching layers of fabric together.   She works with fabric discharge, disperse dyes, image transfer and felt making to create her art.  Recently, Titus has returned to the art of quilt making by creating highly textured surfaces with extensive machine quilting.  Her current body of work is grounded in the traditions of fabric and thread, celebrates color and composition, and maps the interaction between imaginary spaces.

Titus is a member of the Great River Artisans and the Hannibal Alliance Art Gallery. Her work has been exhibited throughout the region and won numerous awards, including the 2008 City of Quincy Purchase Award at the Midsummer Arts Faire in Quincy.
