For CEO Jay Carman, grandson of StandFast's founder, getting his employees more involved in the big-picture mission was the answer.
StandFast isn't the only small business trying to find ways to engage employees at all rungs of the company ladder.
“Employee engagement programs are something that our members take really seriously and we've worked really hard at,” says Judy Hogel, executive director of the nonprofit Chicago Family Business Council. “I just think all of them have realized that with the economic downturn, a happy employee is one who's productive and champions the company and gives 110 percent.”
