Bergman Nurseries celebrates 75 years

Bergman Nurseries celebrates 75 years

1 year, 5 months ago by

One of Quincy’s oldest businesses got its start in the early 1890’s when a Quincy nurseryman started growing fruits and vegetables at 3607 North 12th Street for shipment to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

That little company grew and was called Forest Oak Nursery. Herman Bergman, who worked for the business, liked it so much that he bought it in 1939 after Forest Oak went bankrupt. That’s when Bergman Nurseries began.

Today, Bergman Nurseries is celebrating their 75th year at the same location where it all began.

In 1999, the company was purchased by Tom Friye, an employee for 28 years. Friye ran the business with his sons Todd, Trevor and Travis.  Tom Friye recently retired, and his sons carry on the tradition established long ago.  Landscaping, both residential and commercial, remains the central part of their operation. Bergman's has a Certified Illinois Nurseryman and Certified Irrigation Contractors on staff who design and install landscapes and irrigation systems for business and residential customers.

The Bergman Garden Center remains as one of the top independent and respected garden centers in the tri-state area.  The company has diversified into offering retaining walls, patios, landscape lighting and water gardens.

Their Annual Spring Open House is scheduled for April 25th-May 1st. Bergman's has contests and other events planned throughout the year to mark the landmark anniversary.
