Contributions growing in mayor's race

Contributions growing in mayor's race

2 years, 5 months ago by Bob Gough

We're just over a month away from the general election

We’re a little more than a month away from the general election and the fundraising and ads are starting to pick up in the race for Quincy mayor.

Mayor John Spring held a fundraiser Wednesday evening at the Microtel. It had been postponed by snow the week before. Those totals usually come in smaller amounts and won’t be reported until the next quarterly report filing, which comes after the April 9 general election.

But Spring has picked up some substantial checks so far this month, including $3,000 from the I. U. O. E. Local 399 Political Education Fund of Chicago, $3,000 from the Illinois Pipe Trades of Springfield, another $7,000 from State Sen. John Sullivan (D-Rushville), and $3,000 from the Construction and General Laborer's District Council of Chicago PAC.

With those contributions, Spring appears to have at least pulled even with his challenger, Republican Third Ward Alderman Kyle Moore, who held the early money lead In the race.

But Moore has another fundraiser scheduled for March 14 at the Twin Oaks Republican Club where State Sen. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) is the headliner.

The 18th District Republican Central Committee also gave Moore $1,000 and he also received $3,500 from Lee Lindsay Curtis (who is co-hosting the March 14 fundraiser) and $1,000 from John Stevenson, Jr.

Most of the funds Moore brought in during his February fundraisers at Spring Lake Country Club and Quincy Country Club will not be reported until after the April 9 election.

Both men have also started their direct mail advertising campaigns and Moore has launched radio, television and Internet advertising.

They are slated to appear at the Adams County League of Women Voters forum on March 19 along with the candidates for City Treasurer, incumbent Peggy Crim and challenger Tom Ernst, and they will also take part in a noon forum on March 27 sponsored by YP Quincy.

QuincyJournal.com will have more details on those forums as they draw nearer.
