The Quincy Police Department participated in a STEP Traffic Enforcement detail as part of a grant provided through the Illinois Department of Transportation from December 17 through December 31, 2012. During this time, officers dedicated approximately 44 hours of patrol to this detail, working the daytime hours and evening/overnight hours, specifically targeting driving while impaired, seatbelt, and other moving violations.

Citations that were issued included 34 for no seatbelt, 3 for no valid driver's license, 2 for driving while suspended, 1 for driving without lights when required, 2 DUI's, 1 for improper lane usage, and 1 for no insurance.

The primary focus of this grant is to reduce alcohol related accidents and failure to wear seatbelt incidents. There were 20 warning tickets issued and one warrant arrest.

The United States Department of Transportation recently released updated 2009 fatality and injury data showing that highway deaths fell to 33,808 for 2009, the lowest number since 1950. The record-breaking decline in traffic fatalities occurred even while estimated vehicle miles traveled in 2009 increased by 0.2 percent over 2008 levels. In addition, 2009 saw the lowest fatality and injury rates ever recorded: 1.13 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2009, compared to 1.26 deaths for 2008. Also, fatalities declined in all categories of vehicles including motorcycles, which saw fatalities fall by 850 from 2008, breaking an 11-year cycle of annual increases.
