About 30 jobs in the machine shop are affected

Sources have told QuincyJournal.com that Gardner Denver has laid off about 30 workers in its machine shop.

Company officials would not confirm when contacted by QuincyJournal.com on Wednesday, but workers in the plant and retired workers confirmed the cuts were taking place this week.

"Manufacturing had been pulling orders forward and now the backlog is pretty low, plus orders and expectations are down as well," one source told QuincyJournal.com.

Quincy Mayor John Spring said he had contacted company officials. He said he was also told that orders were down.

The company makes pumps and compressors at its Quincy facility, where the company was founded more than 150 years ago.

Gardner Denver had still employed about 300 people in Quincy after the company moved its corporate headquarters to Wayne, Pa. in 2010.
