The U S EPA is conducting a hearing in Chicago to hear comments on its latest proposed rule regulating green-house gasses. Critics of the rule say it would effectively ban construction of coal fired generators all across the United States.

Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill says that may be an overstatement for effect - but she says she and other members of congress are working to corral the EPA.

"I know that there is a good healthy number of us moderates that are going to hold the line on the EPA, in terms of how reasonable they are as it related to the coal related regulations," McCaskill said.  "And I know we've got a strong bipartisan cooperation in that regard and we will continue to do that."

McCaskill was a cosponsor of legislation that is "intended to slow down the EPA as it relates to some of these issues." She says she opposed Cap and Trade because it would have been too harmful to many small businesses and families on fixed incomes in Missouri which is largely coal dependent. Senator McCaskill was speaking to reporters during her regular conference call from Washington.
