Quincy School Board approves raises for 129 non-union personnel

The Quincy School Board approved raises for non-union personnel that mirrors raises given to teachers and para-educators last year.

Employees on a salary schedule will receive half of a step increase and a small group of hourly employees will receive a 1 percent raise.

Quincy Superintendent of Schools Lonny Lemon said 129 employees are affected.

Teachers are receiving a .8 percent raise this year and a 1.5 percent raise next year. Paraeducators are receiving a .6 percent raise this year and a 1.2 percent raise next year.

Administrators will receive a $328 raise.

Lemon said the increases are within the parameters of the deficit-reduction plan the district is currently implementing.

The Quincy School Board will seek approval from the Illinois State Board of Education to issue $700,000 in life-safety bonds for new plumbing at Quincy High School.

The Board also approved allowing the Quincy Family YMCA to buildi a concession stand at the baseball field located between Baldwin Intermediate School and QHS. The QHS junior varsity uses the field during the school year and the YMCA uses it during the summer for its youth baseball programs.

The Board met for about 15 minutes in open session before going into executive session to discuss raises for non-union employees. The executive session has lasted nearly three hours.

The Board has a second special meeting set for next Monday at 4:30 p.m., will include a public hearing for feedback on the Board’s action regarding the possible reduction of staff.

The Board must give notice to employees who are released at least 45 days before the end of the school year. Those employees can be recalled if funding becomes available or other cuts are made.

At its February meeting, the Board adopted a deficit-reduction plan that includes making $1 million in cuts for the 2012-2013 school year. The Public Hearing offers public input before a final decision is made and that could be announced at the Board’s regular meeting on March 21.
