Dillard wants to cut state gas tax

Gubernatorial candidate says move would provide $450 million in tax relief

Republican candidate for Illinois Governor Kirk Dillard wants to cut Illinois' sales tax on gasoline.

Dillard said Illinois is one of 7 states that charges sales taxes at the gas pump.

“I’m proposing that we cut the sales tax on gasoline, providing roughly $450 million in tax relief to families across Illinois,” said Dillard. “This provides relief too, to all business people and it invests a little bit of savings into repairing our roads and bridges.”

Under Dillard’s proposal, estimates show that the revenue stream could support up to $1 billion of infrastructure improvements.

A recent report found that 73% of Illinois’ major roads are in poor condition and over 2,000 Illinois bridges to be structurally deficient.

The state received a D+ on its latest infrastructure report card.
