LaHood joins law firm

Former congressman and transportation secretary, who isn't a lawyer, says he's also not a lobbyist

PEORIA — He's not a lawyer, but that hasn't stopped Ray LaHood from getting a gig at a multinational law firm.
The longtime Peoria congressman and erstwhile secretary of transportation has started work as a senior policy adviser at DLA Piper's Washington, D.C., and Chicago offices, he said Tuesday.
His work there will focus on helping clients answer the question of "how to implement good policy through good planning and strategic planning, and having kind of a long-range view," LaHood said.
"They were looking for somebody to bring the kind of transportation and infrastructure expertise where they can advise clients on those matters, but also hopefully use some of my international experience — having served on the (House) Intelligence Committee ... and in the administration — to bring some value to their clients," he said.
Don't call it lobbying by any stretch, though.
"One of the things I made very clear to everybody that I talk to, I do not want to be a lobbyist, I'm not going to be a lobbyist," he said. "I'm not going to be calling up my former colleagues who are serving and asking for meetings."
