Sen. Claire McCaskill calls it a "massive fraud"

The U S Senate subcommittee on contracting oversight began hearings Tuesday on what Sub-committee Chair Claire McCaskill of Missouri calls a massive fraud in National Guard Recruiting across the country. McCaskill said bonuses were being paid to people for bringing other people into the National Guard fraudulently.

McCaskill said estimates presented to the sub-committee by the top law enforcement officials from the army, "are this fraud would probably reach around $50,000,000."  She said, "It's the largest criminal investigation in terms of scope that the army has ever done in its history because there are so many people that were fraudulently accessing this money."

McCaskill said the committee spent a great deal of time  in Tuesday's hearing discussing "How this happened, why it happened and how to keep it from happening in the future." The committee also wants to make sure that those involved are held responsible, "especially those who are in leadership positions in the military," McCaskill said.

She said the hearing did a good job of laying out some of the "deficiencies that we continually find in Government in terms of contracting and contracting oversight."
