Illinois Senator renews push for relief on propane costs

Push would make sure legislation can move quickly

State Sen. Sam McCann is once again calling on Gov. Pat Quinn to take action to provide financial relief for residents who rely on propane fuel.

“I’ve been frustrated by the lack of action on this issue, which has hit so many residents right where it hurts the most—their pocketbooks,” said McCann, a Carlinville Republican. “However, as we enter what is likely to be a cold spring season, and residents and business owners look to replenish their propane supplies following our extremely frigid winter, there is still an acute need. I know many will welcome financial assistance.”

The extreme cold that gripped much of the nation this winter pushed propane prices higher, and many families and employers used their fuel reserves at a faster rate, resulting in high propane bills.

McCann said he wants the governor to address the issue when he gives his annual budget message this week.

To make sure legislation can move quickly, McCann said he has filed a new amendment to Senate Bill 1998 that could be advanced at any time. That is in addition to his emergency propane language that has been held in the Senate Assignments Committee since January. The senator said he remains eager to work with his Democrat colleagues to facilitate a resolution to this unnecessarily prolonged issue.

“Amending this legislation is one final avenue I can pursue as I actively work toward a solution that will help those struggling to afford the cost of propane. When the governor summarizes his fiscal plan for the state, I hope he acknowledges the need for a solution to this propane situation. I welcome the opportunity to work with him to move at least one of these measures through the process,” McCann said.
