Former gubernatorial candidate will resign Senate seat July 1
From From suntimes.com:
Regional Transit Authority board members Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to replace outgoing chairman John Gates Jr., a veteran businessman, with former Republican gubernatorial candidate Kirk Dillard, a veteran of the legislative world.Dillard said he was heartened by the "unanimous support" across geographical and party lines for his chairmanship. Gates abstained, Cook County suburbanite Michael Lewis was absent, but Dillard won all 13 other votes, including that of five Chicago board members.Dillard said he will resign his State Senate seat as of July 1, and take over as RTA chair the following day. He needs the time to transition, he said, and his top priority will be "reliability and safety."With lawmakers still chewing over the recommendation of a gubernatorial task force to upend the RTA, Dillard's emergence as RTA chair could help the agency through possibly tough legislative waters in the coming year.RTA Board member Donald DeWitte of Kane County called Dillard "the right guy at the right time.'"Dillard, a Hinsdale Republican, has a "strong working knowledge of mass transit" as a CTA and Metra rider "for many years," DeWitte said. Dillard took the CTA to as a child to the pediatrician's and now takes Metra from his Hinsdale home to his downtown law office.
