St. Francis Solanus Parish launches capital campaign

Church announced Thursday their goal is to raise $2.9 million

The St. Francis Solanus Catholic parish in Quincy announced Thursday they will launch a “Building Together in Faith” three year capital campaign to raise $2.9 million for a new parish center.

Campaign events and requests for pledges and gifts from parishioners and community members will begin this month and run through early December.

The planned parish will be a two-level facility with a covered drop-off canopy, handicapped entrance, additional parking, large vestibule for fellowship, Vestry, choir room, parish library and other meeting spaces.

The center will be located adjacent to St. Francis Church, near the northwest corner of 17th and Elm Streets.

Father Don Blaeser, O.F.M, pastor of St. Francis, says “My hope is that all the activities and the ministries of the parish can be done in a way that is much easier. There are so many times that we’ve got juggling of space, and we don’t have the space or facilities.

Mike Bickhaus, parishioner and chair of the parish hall committee, says “It’s safety, community and convenience.” There are so many people going in and out, we need to have a better place for people to meet, and hopefully this will be an opportunity for the community to get together and talk with one another after church.”

For fundraising, Fr. Blaeser says it’s a two tier approach.

“First, we’re appealing to some major contributors and asking them to give some substantial contributions. The next phase will be to have some gatherings and parties to reach out to some of our generous contributors, and finally, to the parish as a whole so all of that is stretched over a period of 12 weeks, “ says Fr. Blaeser. “At the end of that we’re hoping to have enough pledged so that the contributions will come in over a period of three years.”

A leadership team for the campaign has been meeting for several months and will begin campaign events in mid-October. Campaign Directors include the following: Dennis and Pat Hollbrook, Ken and Tanya Sparrow, Dennis and Marcia Steinkamp and Deacon Wayne and Helen Zimmerman.

Cargill Associates will be the professional fundraising firm assisting with the campaign.

Construction on the parish will begin next spring.
