A dirty smell and taste has persisted in the water supply for more than a week

The Adams County Health Department and the City of Quincy are responding to the persistent complaints regarding the dirty smell and taste of the City's water supply because of brown algea getting into the system.

From the Adams County Health Department: “The Health Department has been receiving an unusually high volume of calls regarding the quality of water in Quincy. As a result, we have spoken with the Quincy Water Department and confirmed with them that the City drinking water supply is safe to drink and has not failed any testing. We have also spoken with local medical providers, including Blessing Hospital, and have confirmed that there are no unusual clusters of illness occurring in Adams County.”

Director of Utilities David Kent says the City has done testing, but has been in contact with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and they will be conducting their own testing.

Kent also responded to a claim made by a woman to KHQA News saying doctors in St. Louis said Quincy's water could be a cause for a virus her daughter has.

"The City of Quincy's potable water meets all regulations established by the (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) and the Illinois Environmental Proection Agency,” Kent said. “At no time has a representative, employer, or physician from St. Louis Children's Hospital made contact with the city to report a water-related illness caused by ingesting potable water of the city of Quincy.”

Maggie Carson from the IEPA said the agency is aware of Quincy's situation with fighting the brown algea.

"We know people are sensitive to the taste and odor situation, but it's not a health risk," Carson said.
